About the exhibition
"HOME/MADE FLESH/BONE" is an evocative and immersive exhibition that marks the first gallery show of the nomadic Family Arts Museum. Curated by Melani N. Douglass, this powerful exhibition delves into the concept of home as a portable sanctuary, especially for people experiencing gentrification, migration, under the guise of urban renewal. The exhibition features the compelling photography of David L. McDuffie, artist-in-residence at the Family Arts Museum, who has documented Black culture across over 17 cities in the U.S. and the Caribbean. Each photograph tells a story of resilience and adaptability, offering a visual narrative that explores the intrinsic human need for a sense of belonging.
Visitors will experience a unique gallery setup designed to resemble a double helix, symbolizing DNA and mirroring the seven chakras. This design emphasizes the idea that Black culture and heritage are carried through our DNA, transcending time and geography. The exhibition includes a robust schedule of programming that brings the rituals of home into the gallery space, curated by Douglass. Highlights include an opening/exhibition blessing, an exhibition housewarming and non-traditional artist talk, a compost teach-in, a live virtual tour, a Playback Theater performance about home, and a closing house party. These events will create an intimate environment, inviting visitors to reflect on their own internal concepts of home and the ways in which home shapes our identities and lives.
"HOME/MADE FLESH/BONE" is on view at Honfleur Art Gallery from July 11 - August 17 2024.
